Board-Certified Psychiatrist | Harvard-Trained | MA Licensed | Records-Based IMOs
Independent medical opinions for VA disability claims, available to Massachusetts veterans through comprehensive records review — with secure-platform DBQ clinical interviews available to verified Massachusetts residents.
Massachusetts is home to more than 250,000 veterans who served across every branch and every era of conflict. Many are now navigating the VA disability claims process and discovering that a well-supported nexus letter from a qualified physician can be the difference between a denial and a favorable rating decision. If you are new to the process, start with our overview of what a nexus letter is.
VetNexusMD provides independent medical opinions (IMOs) and nexus letters for Massachusetts veterans through comprehensive records review. Dr. Ronald Lee, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who holds a full medical license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is based in the Boston area. Because his opinions are built on a thorough review of your records, your location within Massachusetts does not matter — whether you live in downtown Boston, the Berkshires, or on Cape Cod, you receive the same rigorous, evidence-based Independent Medical Opinion.
This page explains how VetNexusMD serves Massachusetts veterans, what conditions we specialize in, how our records-based process works, what the process looks like from start to finish, and what Massachusetts-specific VA resources are available to support your claim.
Important: VetNexusMD provides Independent Medical Opinions (IMOs) based on medical record review. We do not provide treatment, establish ongoing physician-patient relationships, or serve as a substitute for VA healthcare. Nexus letters are medical-legal documents provided to support VA disability claims. Results vary based on individual circumstances and VA rating decisions. Dr. Ronald Lee, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist licensed to practice in Massachusetts and Florida. VetNexusMD is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Dr. Ronald Lee is a Harvard-trained, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) certified psychiatrist, and a physician with direct VA healthcare system experience. When the VA reviews a nexus letter, the credentials of the author matter: a board-certified psychiatrist is the most qualified type of provider to opine on conditions like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder under DSM-5 criteria. Massachusetts veterans have two ways to work with Dr. Lee:
Understanding where you receive VA care helps frame your claim. Massachusetts veterans are served by:
A nexus letter does not replace your VA records — it works with them. Dr. Lee’s opinion is written to be submitted as supporting evidence alongside the documentation already in your VA file.
Key Distinction
VetNexusMD provides independent medical opinions for VA disability claims. We are not a treatment provider and do not establish physician-patient relationships for ongoing care. Our role is to review your records, render an expert psychiatric opinion on service connection, and provide a written medical opinion you submit to the VA as supporting evidence.
Dr. Lee specializes exclusively in psychiatric and mental health conditions.
Dr. Lee also addresses secondary service-connection claims, most commonly:
Dr. Lee does not address musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, or other non-psychiatric conditions unless they are being linked to a primary psychiatric condition through a secondary service-connection claim. All physical diagnoses must already exist in your medical records.
Most VetNexusMD Independent Medical Opinions for Massachusetts veterans are built on a comprehensive review of your records — your service treatment records, VA medical records, C&P exam reports, and any private treatment records. Dr. Lee analyzes this documentation against DSM-5 criteria and the VA’s “at least as likely as not” evidentiary standard, then prepares a detailed written nexus opinion. No appointment and no travel are required.
The records-based model suits Massachusetts veterans for several reasons:
For Massachusetts veterans who need a DBQ
Massachusetts is one of two states where Dr. Lee offers a Disability Benefits Questionnaire completed through a clinical interview on a secure electronic platform. This is a separate $500 service available only to veterans with verified current residence in Massachusetts or Florida. The platform works on any device with a camera, microphone, and internet connection — no software to install; you receive a link before your scheduled interview.
VetNexusMD is a private-pay service. All fees are transparent and listed below. There are no hidden charges, and you will know the full cost before any work begins. All services are priced separately, a la carte.
Record Review
$500
Comprehensive review of your service treatment records, VA records, and private treatment records to determine whether a supportable nexus opinion can be provided. This is a separate fee and is not credited toward the nexus letter.

Expedited Processing
$800
For qualifying cases, in 3 business days. Available only in limited, qualifying cases.
Standard turnaround: 1-2 weeks on average, from deposit and records received.
Risk reversal: If I review your records and determine a nexus letter is not viable, you will not be charged beyond the $500 record review fee.
Nexus letters and record reviews are available to veterans residing in any of the 44 eligible U.S. states. DBQ completion — via a clinical interview on a secure electronic platform — is available only to veterans with verified current residence in Massachusetts or Florida. Services are not currently available to veterans residing in Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, or Tennessee, due to state-specific medical licensure considerations.
VetNexusMD’s records-based model reaches veterans in every region of the Commonwealth. No matter where in Massachusetts you live, your location does not affect the quality or turnaround of your Independent Medical Opinion.

Dr. Lee’s Independent Medical Opinion is written to be submitted as supporting evidence alongside your existing VA records, including care received through VA Boston Healthcare System, the Bedford VA, or the Leeds (Northampton) VA Medical Center. He is independent of the VA and does not replace your VA treatment team.
Psychiatric and mental health conditions exclusively — PTSD (combat, MST, and non-combat), major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, and TBI-related mental health conditions, plus secondary conditions such as OSA secondary to PTSD, depression secondary to chronic pain, and insomnia secondary to PTSD or depression.
For mental health conditions, a board-certified psychiatrist is the most qualified type of provider to opine under DSM-5 criteria. Dr. Lee’s credentials as a Harvard-trained, ABPN-certified psychiatrist, and VA-experienced physician provide a strong foundation for a nexus opinion.
